Backed by the always reliable Shin Sangoku Musou name and the Monster Hunter Portable inspired multiplayer modes, Shin Sangoku Musou: Multi Raid (aka Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce) enjoyed a very successful launch in Japan last February, selling more than 350,000 copies even before it’s next week. After being ported to home consoles, nobody should be surprised with the announcement of the sequel, to be released on PSP next month in Japan. The first game was a refreshing change to the series, so am really interested to see what they are adding to the sequel. Below is a compilation of the information and screens of the games since it was announced late last year.
Still set in the Three Kingdoms era of China but with an all-new original story, Shin Sangoku Musou: Multi Raid 2 begins with the fearful Shi Huangdi being awaken thanks to the overuse of Musou Kakusei (aka Awakening in the English version) in the previous game. Shi Huangdi sets to continue his agenda of rebooting the Qin Dynasty by awaking many other warriors with his powerful spells.
According to Producer Kenichi Ogasawara, this original story will make new players feel at home even if they have little knowledge of the Romance of Three Kingdoms. He also mentions that CG scenes, scenarios and voices in the game have been greatly increased compared to the first game. To the point where they start to worry if the game can fit into the UMD.
Unlike the giant mechanical creatures featured in the first game, Multi Raid 2 will have you fighting against these organic looking and free moving monsters in the game. Apparently these monsters were considered god before but has been ordered by Shi Huangdi to attack the players. Shin Tenroku (above left) and Shin Hekija (second from left) are the origins of the same mechanical monsters found in the first game. Three Headed Eagle (third from left) and Snake Face (right) are recent reveals.
By consuming certain amount of the Kakusei Gauge (Awakening Gauge), Weapon Overdrive can be activated and character in this condition will see his/her attacking power and range greatly increased. This will then activates the weapon-specific Special Attacks which your enemies also possess. View the differences before and after Weapon Overdrive from the first two screens below.
It worth noting that warriors who have activated Weapon Overdrive won’t be able to activate Musou Kakusei immediately but since the former consume lesser Kakusei Gauge, it can be use regularly to gain upper hand over your enemies. According to Director Noriaki Toshikawa, “Players can use Weapon Overdrive to quickly clear up lesser enemies to build up their Kakusei Gauge. However there will be enemies who are hard to defeat if players do not use Weapon Overdrive.”.
On Special Attack, Toshikawa says “Special Attack is like Finishing Move in the first game but it can only be activated with Weapon Overdrive now. This may seems like a reduction in Finishing Moves but every weapons now has new moves that can either be used to initiate attack or do chain attacks.”
Famitsu complaints that having to hold down the L shoulder button to lock-on to an enemy in the first game was quite tiring. Toshikawa says this has been rectified in Shin Sangoku Musou: Multi Raid Special but now some players say they prefer having to hold down L button (laugh). As a result, we make it so that players can set their prefer methods in Multi Raid 2.”
Another feature that is being introduced in Special is the ability to bring along three warriors into the battlefield, something that Toshikawa says they do plan to implement in Multi Raid 2. “We tried to find a way to make use of all the characters that we have in the game and through this feature, players will probably avoid using only specific characters for the entire game.” Ogasawara also confirms that character growth system will be much deeper now.
Support Skill is a new move that will consume the Kakusei Gauge and possess by all the characters. However, this will useful during intense battle since it recover you and your CPU-controlled characters’ health. See it in action above (press and hold the O button to activate).
Kyoutou Ability (Joint Struggle Ability)
A special ability that has character-specific effects like increased item drop rates or increased weapon elemental attack. It activates whenever there is a teammate in the same area as you.
You can now decorate your warriors with colorful items that doesn’t seem to affect their abilities. Some of them will be rare items that you can use to impress your friends.
New Character: Da Qiao
One of the great beauties of ancient China and wife to Sun Ce will make her first appearance in Multi Raid. According to Toshikawa, she is a much requested character from players of the first game. “In titles before Shin Sangoku Musou 4, we always design her and sister Xiao Qiao together but they won’t have many
similarities here. Her weapon has been changed from paper folding fans to two wands, which can hit enemies from distance with it’s lightning strike.” he says. View her character art here and awakening form here.
New Character: Jiang Wei
Zhuge Liang’s favorite student wields a double-edged trident in Multi Raid 2 in order to show that he is a “warrior with a strong will” according to Toshikawa. View his character art here and awakening form here.
New Character: Cai Wenji
After being rescued by Cao Cao from the hands of nomads, Cai Wenji decided to take part in battles and the knowledgeable beauty uses Er Hu (Chinese violin) as weapon. She is said to be good at attacking from medium range. Her character art can be viewed here and the awakening form here.
Previous game only allows multiplayer through the Ad-Hoc Mode and PS3’s Ad-Hoc Party but Multi Raid 2 will now support Infrastructure Mode, allowing players to co-op or challenge players from around Japan. Thanks to their experience with Ad-Hoc Party and the console versions, Toshikawa hopes they won’t have any problems implementing Infrastructure Mode.
With almost a month to go before it’s Japanese release, these seem to be the bulk of the new features. A little bit thin for me but let’s see what’s the next reveal will be. Pre-order for the game is available at Play-Asia for .
