Crisis Core is not the only subject Nomura and co touched on in their latest interview with Japanese gaming mag Dengeki PlayStation. While there are no new information, it’s good to hear from the team on the game that celebrate Final Fantasy’s 20th anniversary. My Japanese is anything but good and there might be things that was mistranslated by the machines, so do take this with a pinch of salt.

Dissidia Final Fantasy

On the reason behind Dissidia Final Fantasy being an action game, Nomura explains that the plan started after a discussion with Kingdom Hearts’ Yousuke Shiokawa and it was decided that a 3D action game based on Shiokawa’s team technical expertise is the best way to gather all the characters from the FF series. Shiokawa, who is the game’s director, acknowledge that the pressure is building up recently after the game’s public revelations.

PSP was chosen as the platform due to it’s ad-hoc mode and the fact that people generally don’t like split screen gaming. Nomura said that with its large install base, the PS2 maybe the natural choice but it also means that multiplayer modes has to be played on split screen, which reduce the fun factor by half.

Apparently the trailer at the recent Square Enix Party 2007 says that the story will revolves around 10 characters, and there was a rumor that it’s the number of playable characters the game will have. Shiokawa denies it and says that the number of playable characters and who will make an appearance are secrets and will be revealed little by little. I am not very sure about this, but it seems that in the single player mode, players have to pick a character and follow a story specific to that character and thus guaranteeing multiple plays.

Moving on to the game setting, the location revealed in the magazines so far appear to be from FF1 and FF9, Shiokawa says that the team is hard at work to make sure that the game setting and the characters that appear there seem natural and believable. As for destructible environment, it seems that there is a plan for it but making sure that the environments staying true to their original is the developers’ main concerns.

Dissidia Final Fantasy

The team is utilizing their extensive knowledge from the Kingdom Hearts series to work on Dissidia’s battle system, and the game will be a mixture of the best elements from KH and new gameplays exclusive to this game. When asked about the multiplayer modes, Nomura’s answer is “How many people? What is the distance? These are still a secret.” and that to me is a confirmation that the game will features Infrastructure (online) mode.

On the other hand, Shiokawa confirms that FF series mainstays of levels up, class changing and weapons upgrade are in the game and interestingly, there seems to be some character customization options available.

Finally the article states that the game will be playable at Tokyo Game Show 2007 this September. Via FF7AC reunion.

[...] In an interview with Degenki, Final Fantasy Dissidia producer Tetsuya Nomura explained why Dissidia is heading to PSP instead of other more popular systems (such as the PS2). A translation from PSPHyper shows the reasoning: “PSP was chosen as the platform due to it’s ad-hoc mode and the fact that people generally don’t like split screen gaming.
