Monster Hunter Portable 2nd: Portable Blog

Yian GarurugaMonster Hunter is a game of great struggles and great achievements. Sometimes you met monsters that seemingly impossible to beat and yet you decided to give it a try. What always happened to me is I usually do well on my first try, almost killing those dinosaurs in most cases but a distinct lack of concentration in the final moments alway fails me. I pick myself up, get all the items that was missing in my first try and revisit the quest immediately only to find that strangely enough, I can’t even match my first performance. However, once I’m beaten, I never really move on to other quest as revenge becomes the first priority. After a few days, I finally did it, and the moment when the winning tune start playing, every gamers should know how it feels after killing a boss with an unfair amounts of health.

That’s exactly what happened in the last two nights for me when I took up a quest that’s a little bit too early for my rather average weapons, after 5 tries and extreme struggles (or frustration?), I killed a Yian Garuruga in the thick jungle with an underpowered weapon. It’s a monster migrated from Monster Hunter 2 (PS2) and it can be unlocked once you’ve killed 10 Yian Kut-kut. With a price tag of 3600 gold, the second highest so far in the Village 4 Stars Quest, I expected great resistance but not at this scale. The thing has enormous amount of health and has some consecutive attacking moves that will send you straight to the camp once it gets really angry. And the fact that it’s night in the dense jungle map doesn’t help, and I think this is where the mainstream reviewers found that the game is bad and doesn’t worth their time because they have 5 more games to review. There are just too many plants that block your view and too many small monsters that attack only you (though it’s funny when they were killed accidentally by the boss monsters) and the camera always struggles when you’re up against the wall or stuck in a narrow area. I can’t help but feels that it’s unfairly tough and the fact that there is no bar that shows how hurt is the monster doesn’t helps either. Only revenge and the fact that many people has reach HR4 or HR5 keep me going here and you can probably imagine how it feels when the final hit is delivered and the monster went down slowly.

I have posted my strategy on this particular quest in the Monster Hunter Portable 2nd Guide.
