What is Patapon?

While the PSP received plenty of attention during Sony’s E3 press conference, there’re not many new titles announced. Two of them, ecochrome and Patapon are the only original titles. ecochrome received special mention by SCE Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison himself but Patapon was only part of the minutes long trailer montage. But man it looks fun and beg to be played.

It has that Loco Roco feel to it, and makes me wonder if director Tsutomo Kouno has any part in this quirky game, which has so far gathered plenty of positive vibes. From the trailer, which is available at GameSpot and 1Up, it appears to be a 2D platformer with music rhythm elements in it. Player controls army that has this cute looking characters with big eyeball and fight giant monsters along the way. Loco Roco style music and sound effects can be heard throughout the gameplay.

In a recent press release given to European press, the game seems to set for release in that territory this October 19th. So we should be able to get more details pretty soon. Here’s a few screens captured from the GameSpot trailer. More after the jump.

[...] Patapon is the only game that really caught my attention during the E3 and there is so little information about it since that. Finally Sony Japan put up the game’s official Japanese website but the only section that is clickable at the moment is “About” (click on the first tree at the bottom of the pop up). A little google on the copyright message below the site reveals that French artist Rolito is the designer behind the game, he had previously work with SCEE on a PlayStation soccer game. That’s all I know about the game so far, more is sure to come. [...]

  2. PSPHyper » Play As God With Patapon

[...] Famitsu has first information on the great looking 2D game that Sony showed during E3, Patapon. It appears to be a music and rhythm game where player acts as god and controls the Patapons by tapping the PSP buttons to produce different drum beats. Different combination of drum beats can instruct the Patapons to do actions like advance, protect and attack. As shown in the trailer, these weird creatures march in group and defeat giant monsters standing in their ways. Treasures and weapons can be obtained after killing these monsters which can then be used to make stronger weapons and strengthen your army in a village. There will be a few mini games to keep players entertained while at the village as well. The game uses French artist Rolito’s artworks and they are really amazing to look at, check them out here.
